Street Photography or ‘candid’ photography as some call it, is taking pictures of people primarily or places that feature unexpected encounters or random incidents in public places. In simple words, street photography aims to capture everyday life in public places, be it rural or urban landscapes. Usually, it’s a form of candid photography, when the person isn’t aware they’re being photographed, which creates more realistic, interesting, and powerful images.
Regarding consent to be taken, it’s not necessary. If the photographer is shooting in a public space, such as a street or a park, he or she will usually have the right to do so without the consent of the subjects. Generally speaking, if you can see it from a public space, you can take a picture of it. You can take any photos you want of people when they are in a public location, like a park, a beach, or a city square. It’s perfectly legal since they have elected to place themselves in a public location and have no reasonable expectation of privacy.
Some have asked me this question if one can earn from ‘street’ photography? Maybe you can make some money by selling street photography prints, not digital ones though, coz they are all over the internet! But I honestly don’t think you can make a full-time living purely selling prints. But however I know some ‘street’ photographers who have built up a strong enough following, and they can sell their photos as fine art. So you never know where you can reach if you are dedicated!
Coming to the ethical issue, street photography in and of itself is not an ethical issue. The ethos of most street photographers is to maintain the right of freedom of expression and to capture the world through images.
Happy shooting!!!
