We, South Indians swear by Sambar, and for many of us, the day or week starts with some yummy hot sambar with steaming hot idlies, crispy vade, or masale dose. Sambar is a very popular dish down south. According to some historical sources, the origin of sambar is in Madurai and it dates back to the 17th century. Since there was no kokum, they used tamarind, the local souring agent. The dish, made almost by accident, was appreciated and named ‘sambar’ in honour of Sambhaji,” So the quintessentially Tamilian Sambar was a Maratha creation. Well, that’s history!!!
Whether it originated in Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra or Karnataka, all we know today is that Sambar is extremely popular world over. Idli, Vada, Masala Dosa cannot be eaten without a generous serving of Sambar.
Bangalore has some vintage joints, from the pre-independence days which serve some of the best South Indian delicacies along with their signature sambar!!!
My favourites are Vidyarthi Bhavan, NMH, Janardhana, Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room, Sanman (RV Road), Janata Hotel, and many more!
