Philanthropy, charity and the social media drama

Absolutely selfless deeds are difficult to perform. This is because the satisfaction of making a difference in itself is a reward. Whether this reward was sought or not is irrelevant. Nonetheless, our society needs charity. What it doesn’t need is immature gratification in the name of social service.
Orphanage birthday celebrations are a case in point. I suspect this disease appeared in India around the turn of the millennium with the rise of the nouveau riche. This guilt-ridden class with their newfound wealth and compassion (always surfacing around the time of their children’s birthdays) towards the less fortunate has taken to celebrating the event in orphanages. Their minds clouded by a (false) sense of righteousness, these families make a spectacle of themselves in front of these unfortunate children. They flaunt the very two things that these kids lack….wealth and a family!!! The orphans are forgotten till a Kodak moment presents itself.
If this wasn’t travesty enough, this is plastered all over social media, Facebook, and Instagram arrogantly unmindful of the fact that these pictures may surface eventually to embarrass the children in question.
If you want to make a noise about charity, do so quietly. And if you want to go ahead, I have a couple of candles for you and I know exactly where to put them!
